Statement from NADF on fludrocortisone and vaccine efficacy: Important Notice: We have noticed that some online health resources mistakenly group fludrocortisone with glucocorticoids, confusing their actions. Fludrocortisone is a mineralocorticoid with minimal glucocorticoid activity. It does not cause the side effects associated with excess glucocorticoids. Additionally there is a great deal of misinformation regarding vaccines. There is no contraindication for live virus vaccines in children or adults with adrenal insufficiency. Live vaccines include essential immunizations such as MMR & varicella, which all children should receive. For adults the shingles vaccine is an attenuated live virus vaccine & it is also safe and effective. If fever or arm pain occurs after vaccination simply manage the side effects as needed & if necessary take a slight extra dose of hydrocortisone. Fludrocortisone does not prevent vaccines from working. When reading health information online, always verify the source & rely on reputable, evidence-based resources.
