Just finished making this twin pair of small (2.75" x 4" x .75") blank journal books, love adding deckled page edges for a little charm. Made by a person, by hand, not by a machine.

Once the cover boards for the book are dry, I handrub a thin protective wax glaze over the paper to protect it. An old iron napkin holder works perfect for holding the boards. Sewing the pages & cover together is next, taking 2-3 hours, depending on the book size.
