Foreword for Cosmic Journeys and Gothic Visions:
If you enjoy paintings crafted with words as pigments, you’ve come to the right place.
Timons Esaias wrote that literary poetry has become “mired in confessional.” These are not those poems. Cosmic Journeys and Gothic Visions is a documentary of folklore, past and future, and full of photographs, video clips, and sound bites. The narration of the documentary consists of dialogue as Manly Wade Wellman’s Silver John escorts John Myers Myers’ Silverlock through a time-hopping exploration of the fantastic.
Unlike modern literary poetry, most of this book is external to the poet, but internal to our culture and the sub-culture that embraces folklore across all possible realities. As such, the book exists in the liminal space between individual and tribe.
The poems are cinematic, imperative, forsooth, and technological by turns. Sometimes picaresque time-hopping leaves the reader with a fortunate case of dislocation from the contemporary world. But these poems are more a case of relocation, moving readers from the media-wallowing present to the intriguing hotspots of all creation. The travelogue covers serious cautionary tales, and frivolous whimsy, familiar coastlines and foreign syntaxes.
— Dr. Herb Kauderer, Hilbert College
Award-winning poet and English professor Dr. Herb Kauderer penned a kick-ass foreword for my double-length speculative poetry collection COSMIC JOURNEYS AND GOTHIC VISIONS. He deftly described what makes my poetry different from much contemporary literary verse.
