South Korea-embarked _Torm Diana_ arrives at Port of Tauranga overnight Wednesday. And on March 30, tugs are expected to help the 109,900 tonne _Front Pollux_ tie up at the fuel terminal at Marsden Point. These are the last of the eight oil tankers that the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment expects to arrive in New Zealand up to and including April 1. _Front Pollux_ , the biggest of those, is carrying only jet fuel and diesel, not petrol. After April 1, officials say, arrivals are too variable, too uncertain, to estimate how many ships may be New Zealand-bound. The _Redwood Mariner_ is heading due south from Anegasaki in Japan. The _Amasya_ and the _Oriental Aquamarine_ are in the East China Sea, en route from South Korea. And the _Chang Hang Kai Tuo_ has just left Pengerang in Malaysia. The uncertainty comes as The Australian newspaper reports US-based energy giant ExxonMobil has hired investment bank Goldman Sachs for a likely exit from the New Zealand market; that’s confirmed by Newsroom sources. Neither Mobil nor BP is answering questions. However, Lindis Jones, chief executive of locally operated Z Energy, says his company has 266 million litres of diesel, petrol and jet fuel on its way. International fuel shipping has always been subject to challenges. Two years ago the _Front Pollux_ was sidetracked to rescue the crew of the sailing yacht Nina Pope, sinking in eight-metre swells 2400km west of Cape Town. And another tanker that’s just left Timaru this week, the _Scarlet Ray_ , survived a hit by a Houthi ballistic missile in the Red Sea, near the Saudi port of Yanbu late last year. Of course, the Strait of Hormuz today poses a far greater threat to any ship’s master brave or foolish enough to try to use it – that’s at the heart of the global oil shock. But the biggest threat to New Zealand supplies is having the ships diverted elsewhere, or stopped from leaving by fuel export caps like that being implemented by South Korea. Start your day informed. Join For Free Australia’s energy minister has revealed that six ships from Malaysia, Singapore and South Korea, expected to arrive in Australia next month, have been cancelled or deferred. New Zealand shipments are similarly at risk, being at the end of a long supply line and strategically unimportant to suppliers. Both Channel Infrastructure at Marsden Point and Port Taranaki in New Plymouth are offering unused tanks to stockpile more fuel – though with Brent crude opening at US$113 a barrel, and jet fuel topping $200 a barrel, it may be too little, too late. Associate Energy Minister Shane Jones tells Newsroom it would take several months to commission the tanks. Jones acknowledges there’s not as much petrol on its way as there is diesel, but says diesel is critical to transport and industry. “A shortage of diesel would literally bring the economy to its knees.” The uncertainty has contributed to a Cabinet decision this week to provide financial support. Ministers have prepared a fuel crisis bailout package so cash-strapped families can get to their jobs and get their kids to school. Middle-income workers are a key swing voter demographic in election year, Jones acknowledges. “You may very well think that.” MBIE can’t say how many ships are headed this way after the _Front Pollux_ , passing south of the Solomon Islands on Tuesday morning. But Lindis Jones tells Newsroom that Z Energy (New Zealand’s biggest fuel importer) has a total of five vessels on the water or in the process of loading, representing 266 million litres of diesel, petrol and jet fuel. “Given ongoing volatility in global energy markets, we are continuing to identify and assess alternative supply options,” he says. “This remains a highly dynamic global situation.” He says Z’s international supply chain is operating as planned, at this point. Many cargoes are secured through long‑standing supply partners. “Supply arrangements for New Zealand are likely to continue evolving as conditions change, and Z is providing the New Zealand Government with the most up‑to‑date information available to support shared situational awareness.” Port Taranaki chief executive Simon Craddock says it’s important that New Zealand has stockpiles of fuel distributed around the country – that’s why he’s been offering storage tanks in New Plymouth. “Our customers are, of course, calling out the higher cost of fuel and the impacts that’s having on their businesses. So in particular, that’s the forestry and agriculture industries, who both use diesel as inputs for transport and in their core operations.” Port Taranaki is the only deepwater port on New Zealand’s West Coast able to accommodate the bigger tankers. “These vessels go right around the globe,” he says. “We see a number of them as regular callers, but very many of them are off doing different cargoes in different places.” **Newsroom exists because of readers like you.
