Former Prime Minister John Major questions the ‘validity’ of First Past the Post There has been a significant intervention in the debate around electoral reform recently, in the guise of former Prime Minister John Major. The Conservative politician has questioned the

with this many parties in play, and #FPTP , it is going to throw up some wild results.

chuck in some rubbish weather on the day, and... any prediction is pure guesswork.

Just wanted to throw this out here for anyone who blames someone for vote splitting, but will refuse to vote anyone other then Liberal even when it is a better options to vote NDP or even Green.

It's also why FPTP sucks.

#FPTP needs to go. esp. as more parties are entering the field. with 4-5 parties in proper play, some very odd results are going to emerge.

#FPTP was designed when it was #tories vs. #labour

no longer fit for purpose.

Ignoring that St George was a foreigner who is patron saint of other countries and definitely NOT English, this racist behaviour sadly symbolises the fact that our democracy, and First Past The Post in particular, are broken

Scotland’s Parliament still has too much First Past the Post When the Scottish Parliament was created, it was built to be different to Westminster. A system designed to reflect how all Scots voted, not just who comes first in each area. Scotland uses what is called the Additional Member System. You get two votes. One for a local MSP, decided by First Past the Post […]

#Labour members voted overwhelmingly in 22 or 23 for PR.

Shitshow #Starmer thought he'd ignore what the majority wanted & stick with #FPTP.

Looking back, the signs were already there that he didn't give a fuck what the people wanted, only what suited himself.

Yes, the French electoral system is only marginally less appalling than the UK's #FPTP one.

1 0 0 0

but who will they vote for?

you can't vote for "not Labour".

not implying they shouldn't change, but every choice has its own set of constraints.

and #FPTP where a lot of candidates are present, and diluting that vote, can lead to some very odd outcomes!

“Big tent” under FPTP usually means swallowing views you don’t share to block the side you fear more. That isn’t proof of less tribalism. It’s proof that the system pressures voters into fewer camps and punishes honest representation. #cdnpoli #FPTP #FairVote

well, that's what the stupid polling companies do exactly.

hence this a recent one.

seriously, how hard is #FPTP to understand?

you seem to think there is a different way that it works as opposed to "first past the post"

always seemed obvious to me.

and worked okay when it was "labour XOR tory"

0 0 1 0

okay. Reform, then?

#FPTP remember.

Reform currently polling a landslide victory... with 27% of the vote.

so yes, not Tories; i should have said Reform.

0 0 0 0

Reform's poll lead is only important because of #FPTP

otherwise they'd be a sideshow with a few MP's here and there.

it really is that important.

pretty sure i've not opined on NHS finding levels, so please try to keep it polite.

Reform are on track to win a huge majority, but with only 27% of the vote.

so, is it the Greens' fault? only in the context that #FPTP doesn't work in multi-party elections.

look at the damage Reform did to the Tories in the last election despite only getting 14% of the vote.

0 0 2 0

indeed! #reform with their projected 27% of the vote are right now predicted to win an absolute landslide in the next GE.

73% don't vote for you, but all you need to do is get one more vote than 2nd place.

who doesn't love #FPTP !

#FPTP looks horrifying right now with #reform likely to win a landslide with about 28% of the vote out of the 50% of people who bother to even turn up.

the #greens have purloined a huge chunk of the #labour vote and it looks like they will end up simply taking each other down.

FPTP turns political parties into hockey teams.
People cling to parties they no longer believe in just to stop the one they hate more.

Losing with your hockey team sucks.
Losing with a political party affects millions of Canadians.

if you're wondering... look at how Reform has stripmined the Tories' support in the UK.

the key advantage in Oz though is no use of #FPTP so it is very difficult to win a seat with a minority of the vote.

might get a beer and strap myself in.

1 0 0 0

looks like you lot are doing as well as the Tories over here. polling in the toilet...

however the party doing well is "Reform". currently polling 28%.

pretty low? how can they win?

#FPTP you only need 1 more than the next candidate.

50% will bother to vote.

so a "landslide" on 14% of the vote!

0 0 2 0

the most infuriating thing about the exceptional and remarkable success of the #Greens in gathering members and support is...

...that because of #FPTP ...

...it massively increases the likelihood of #reform winning an election as #UKLabour supporters drift over to the #Greens

1 0 2 0

yup, with #FPTP that looks like a #reform landslide

with about a quarter of the population voting for them.

the UK has a major democratic problem staring it in the face.

can you imagine a #reform government for 5 years?

1 0 1 1

If only we could get that into the heads of @labouruk.bsky.social !

Last time #FPTP worked for them (with a lot of tactical voting to #GetToriesOut) but that may not work next time.

2 1 1 0

I most certainly agree that #FPTP is what makes #Reform the serious threat to democracy that it is (or Farage is to be more accurate) but diversity of approaches is IMO the best way to chip away at the coalition that is now voting Farage. We need #proportionalRepresentation so we can be disunited.

1 0 0 0

For one thing, we’re divided, so we can fall

Especially under #FPTP

If the voting system doesn’t change, tactical voting has to become mainstream and be guided by reliable data

0 0 1 0

#FPTP and #SafeSeat parachutes does nothing to keep founding principles safe, nor did "block voting" or "granny farming" care facilities. Wasn't ever necessarily "the best of us" but educationally that is what we're sold. Proper oversight with deadly teeth has never been encouraged by themselves. 🙂

i specifically remember my "union until the day i die" father's reaction. wow! i'd never seen him really upset before, and never really again afterwards.

i am a great fan of the Oz system, though.

do not get me started on #FPTP

i will....

guaranteed universal suffrage as well. indeed democracy is mandatory!

equally strict rules for the two houses.

Balen Shah’s RSP sweeps Nepal polls, winning 125 of 165 seats under FPTP Kathmandu, March 9 (SocialNews.XYZ) As counting of votes concluded in 163 electoral constituencies out of 165 under the First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) system in Nepal’s parliamentary elections by Monday evening, the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) secured nearly 76 per cent of the seats in the House of Representatives in a sweeping electoral victory. The three-and-a-half-year-old party, led by its President Rabi Lamichhane and Prime Ministerial candidate Balen Shah, secured victory in 125 seats, as one heavyweight leader after another from traditional political parties — including former Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli — fell before the RSP wave sweeping the country.
