UPDATE: The judge also ordered that Gomes da Silva not be moved out of Massachusetts without 48 hours’ notice to the court. That's especially important because the ICE/DHS strategy is to get those detained out of state ASAP to make disappearing them easier. #FreeMarcelo

UPDATE: Marcelo's hearing is scheduled for today (Thursday, 6/5) in Chelmsford, MA. His attorney, Robin Nice, told WCVB that the 18-year-old is sleeping on a cement floor and sharing one open toilet with about 40 others at the facility.

He was a kid with a bright future who got caught in the gears of a system that’s more interested in headlines than humanity. As for why so many visas expire—it’s not as simple as people being careless. The truth is, that our immigration system is a bureaucratic maze. Renewals can be expensive, complicated, and painfully slow. Processing times can stretch out for months or even years, especially for families who don’t have access to legal help or who are stuck waiting on a backlog that just keeps growing. People fall out of status not because they want to, but because the system sets them up to fail. You’re right to urge people to keep their paperwork in order. But we’ve also got to fight for a system that makes that possible—one that doesn’t turn a missed form or a delayed renewal into a life-altering arrest. No child should be taken from their school and locked in a detention center for a paperwork issue. We can do better than this. We have to.
This disappearance tugs at my heartstrings like so many others. NOT a hardened criminal. Why are so many VISAs expired? Is it negligence, forgetfulness, or difficulty in getting them renewed? Every person here on a VISA please 🙏 take care of this. Now.
