Ireland Paid Its Artists – Did It Work? While the visual arts remain in a fragile state, the government’s Basic Income for the Arts has helped make creative practice more viable

My latest piece for Frieze is on the Basic Income for the Arts scheme in Ireland. A fantastic success, the pilot has now been made permanent - a model for other EU countries to follow.

Collage of photographs taken at the splendid Arts & Crafts gem, Blackwell House in Cumbria. The sizeable grand house was designed by architect Mackay Hugh Baillie Scott in 1900. See post I of II for a bit more info.

Couldn't resist posting this collage as a follow-up, to showcase some of the variety of Arts & Crafts fashions on display.

Image shows a collage of four pictures, a long horizontal image along the bottom, a larger portrait image on the left and two smaller square images on the right.

Top left: a stained glass window with a symmetrical vine design in red, lilac, green and turquoise colours.
Right top: the 'White Drawing Room' (see previous post).
Right bottom: a glazed tile by William De Morgan in blues and greens of the 'Bedford Park Daisy' pattern.
Bottom: a section of wood-carved frieze featuring a repeating vine and grapes design (similar to the stained glass window). This design is seen in white above the fireplace in the previous post.

For further information and details on how to visit this fantastic place, their website is: www.blackwell.org.uk

BATTLE SCENE FROM THE GREAT TRAJANIC FRIEZE, 114-120 CE. ARCH OF CONSTANTINE

This triumphal arch is a triumph of spolia, consisting as it does of many pieces of relief work from the reigns of Trajan, Hadrian, and Marcus Aurelius, intelligently chosen by Constantine in 315-316 to reflect a reassuring programme of pacification and an end to civil war. Four large panels from a Hadrianic relief 30 m long and 3 m high, of which this is one, were reused. This relief is known as the Great Trajanic Frieze, though its original location is unknown. It is often said to have come from Trajan's Forum, though that was intact until at least the reign of Theodoric, two centuries after the arch was built. This scene shows a mêlée between Roman cavalry and infantry and Dacians who are falling or already on the ground. In the background are three trumpeters blowing the curved horns called buccinæ, and the whole scene resembles the front of the Great Ludovisi Sarcophagus, from 250-260 CE.

#ReliefWednesday takes us to the #Arch of #Constantine in #Rome, where a piece of the so-called Great Trajanic #Frieze, probably from the reign of #Hadrian, shows a battle scene from the #Dacian wars which may have influenced the sculptor of the Great #Ludovisi #sarcophagus. #AncientBluesky 🏺

Framed piece of art that is only text that says in black text looking down, she saw that her stocking had a run. La Migra came like a storm today. The end of a black thread was caught on her heel it trails away winding around the corner she pictured an empty school and feared they would notice it and find her.

FRIEZE FRAGMENT, 107-110 CE. PASSAGE UNDER VIA DEI FORI IMPERIALI

We don't know very clearly from what part of the Basilica Ulpia this came from, but it seems likely to have once formed part of the façade of this huge enclosed public space, part law court, part piazza, built by Trajan and given his family name. Discovered as recently as 2007, it shows a delicate vegetal motif similar to a stylised acanthus. (We're probably looking at it upside down.) This massive monumental structure probably continued to play a role in Roman public life until it was destroyed by one of the earthquakes of the C9. After that, it was fair game for the scavatori, the marble-diggers, who broke up the remnants and put them in the lime kilns.

FRAGMENT OF FRIEZE, C. 120 CE. BASILICA OF NEPTUNE

This piece of Luni marble was found following demolitions for the isolation of the Pantheon from the later buildings attached to it, in the late C19. It's part of the long frieze going around the huge hall called the Basilica of Neptune, initially built by Agrippa and subsequently rebuilt by Hadrian, retaining the same marine imagery. A drawing around the fragment indicates the missing elements. Pairs of evil Roman dolphins seem to be discussing attack plans, with their heads downward and tails up. A sort of palmette separates them. A trident stands atop a shell which divides this dolphin from a mirrored version of itself on the other side. These marine elements refer to the triumph of Augustus at the sea battle of Actium. Above, we have an excellent series of Roman decorative frames: first, a Lesbian kymation, then dentils, then a row of beads, and at top an egg and dart motif.

ANAKTORON FAÇADE FRIEZE, 560-550 BCE. MUSEO ARCHEOLOGICO NAZIONALE DI POTENZA

This terracotta decoration, fragmentary as it is, testifies to the great palace or anaktoron built atop the flat plain of the hill of Torre di Satriano in the province of Potenza in northern Basilicata, replacing an earlier edifice that was destroyed by fire (regime change?). This magnificent frieze of warriors shows the clash point between two armies. From left, a hoplite wearing a helmet and short shorts is raising his spear and an elongated shield against the enemy, similar but with a round shield, who is backed by a warrior riding a horse, with another horse beside him. The elegant bas-relief has inscriptions in Laconic-Tarantine Greek dialect on the back, so we know these artisans were literate, Greek, and from Taras, later Taranto.

For #ReliefWednesday we're at an Iron Age #palace or #anaktoron in #Lucania to look at the #frieze on the façade, with battling hoplites in terracotta from 560-550 BCE. This is contemporary with the late regal period in archaic #Rome. #AncientBluesky 🏺
