This is a great feature, we needed it for a while.
Not only is verification of notable and official organizations and individuals good; but, authentication to get the checkmark in the first place, rather than handing them to anyone for a fee, is a good thing.

What made Twitter useful and famous was not the food pics, was not the news, was not the billionaires and celebrities posting. What made Twitter grow was it utility to share statuses of regional chaotic events, collaboration and openness of others to help, including professionals and execs. #GoBSKY
This seems to be the beginning of the end of a 14 year journey on my former favorite platform that hosted so many discussions and spread (mis-)information and memes always >2 weeks earlier than all other platforms.
