livre Les âmes mortes de Nikolaï Vasilievitch Gogol, censuré par la police du Tsar Nicolas 1er, mais également saboté, plusieurs fois brûlé par son auteur qui voulait en prévision de la répression lui donner une issue "morale" et resté largement inachevé à la mort de Gogol en 1852. Les Âmes mortes révèlen le combat acharné d'un homme vers un but et contre des forces qui le dépassent. Vaste méditation sur la mort, cette épopée comique aux relents de cauchemar, construite dans le plus pur style de l'épopée picaresque à la Don Quichotte, nous entraîne avec une virulence de ton parfois diabolique dans un monde où les morts se monnayent et se négocient, quand les vivants eux prennent l'allure de grotesques fantômes. Univers fantasmagorique où le mensonge, le délire et la logique du rêve se télescopent. Dickens et son Pickwick (à peu près contemporain, Gogol esquissant son livre dès 1837) ne sont pas loin. Mais Dante non plus, un Dante qui ne nous aurait laissé que son Enfer, et dont le Purgatoire, comme le Paradis, auraient été livrés aux flammes, dans une frénésie autodestructrice à laquelle Kafka - le véritable héritier de Gogol - faillit lui-même bien plus tard succomber.
