The #GoodFridayAgreement was signed on #ThisDayInHistory in 1998 by the UK, #Ireland, and #SinnFéin for the #IRA. Its goal of a devolved government, dismantling #ethnocracy, and ending #TheTroubles has been largely successful, even if an artificial border still divides families.

The path to the #GoodFridayAgreement wound through events like the #DocklandsBombing, #ThisDayInHistory in 1996. UK demanded #ProvisionalIRA disarm before peace talks, so they caused £150 million in damage & killed two with a massive explosion; London promptly dropped the demand.

Kosovo, Crimea, Donbas, Golan,West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza, Taiwan... Where exactly is the single process or set of rules by which these territory disputes get settled? Why is it not all more or less like #GoodFridayAgreement?

It was, at last, recognition by the English, that the people of Ireland and Northern Ireland should decide – by mutual consent and by peaceful political debate – how the Irish should organize their governments. It was an important part of the Good Friday Agreement that, for the most part, put an end to the para-military conflict in Ireland called “The Troubles.”
