Review – ‘Hyperspace Stories: Grievous’ Is a Solid Clone Wars Story
A new graphic novel in Dark Horse Comics’ _Hyperspace Stories_ line turns the focus on General Grievous, looking at the cyborg warrior’s early days as leader of the Separatist Army as he is pitted against a new Jedi Master. This story, written by Michael Moreci (_Star Wars: The Bad Batch-Ghost Agents_) with art by Caio Filipe (_Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures_), will make a fine addition to the collection of any Grievous fan.
The story focuses on Grievous as he grapples with his identity in the early days of the war. He is a leader with unquestioned authority, but he is also a servant of Dooku. He is a skilled warrior and tactician, yet his enemies see him as a mindless monster. The story begins on Serenno, where Dooku challenges him to confront his true identity and embrace it, giving Grievous a mission and sending him alone to the remote world of Katou, where he faces a new enemy.
Speaking of that new enemy, I have to comment on the name of the new Jedi Master — Cardiff Baye. This name will likely mean nothing to the majority of readers, but, as a Welshman, the name immediately jumped out as a not-very-subtle reference to Cardiff Bay, the waterfront area of our capital city and home to the Senedd, our parliament. As far as I can tell, no one on the creative team has any connection to Wales, but perhaps this is an attempt to butter up my fellow countrywoman, Lucasfilm President Lynwen Brennan? Whatever the reason, I’m always appreciative of a reference to my homeland, so this comic scored well with me!!
Cardiff is a fun character; he has flair and says he is grateful to Anakin because he took the title of ‘most arrogant Jedi’ away from him!! But Master Baye is also a spiritual Jedi who explains his faith in the Force to his clone troops. It is Baye’s faith, more so than his skill with a lightsaber, which proves the biggest challenge to Grievous in his mission.
My one wish is that we could have dug more into Grievous. He is still finding his feet — he only wields one lightsaber at this point, and he is looking to cement his role in the Separatist Army under Dooku. All that plays out really well, but I found myself wanting to dig more into his character. References are made to his life as a warlord before becoming a cyborg, but it doesn’t go further. I think just a one-page flashback to that life and how he became part-machine would have given more weight to his story, which at times was overshadowed by Baye’s.
But overall, the story has a solid arc to it. Baye and his troops are called to Katou, where Grievous is waiting for them. It all plays out like it could have easily been an episode or mini-arc of _The Clone Wars._ There are fun action sequences, monster encounters, and moments of reflection and introspection for the lead characters, who all take something away from the encounter _._ If you’re a fan of Grievous or the Clone Wars era in general, I would give this a read.
