Photo of some broad leafed greenish yellow lettuce leaves mixed in with green spinach leaves that were gathered from our garden today. This is the first batch from a modest patch, that we have growing in the front yard bed.
Photo of eight ground cherry, also known as Physalis pods. Ground Cherries are a member of the Nightshade family, so you have to be careful when you pick and eat them. Some pods are a brown colour, indicating they are ripe. The greenish yellow ones are close to being ripe and can be eaten safely, but it's best to wait until the pods are a more brown colour. Even ripe Ground Cherries shouldn't be eaten in large quantities because they contain Solanine and other toxins which is harmful in large quantities. When ripe they provide Vitamin A, C, K and minerals such as iron and potassium. The greener the pod the more dangerous to eat. The pea sized berry inside the pod tastes like a cross between a cherry tomato and a pineapple, or an apricot to some people. As with all nightshade plants, keep any part of the plant away from your furry companions.
Photo of more of our red and yellow raspberries. We must have gotten an overbearing variety, because they're producing fruit like crazy. The yellow ones have started coming in now in greater quantities. We'll have plenty to eat fresh and freeze for the winter months.
From the garden today: See Alt Txt for details.

Pineapple meets tomato in a husk! ππ
Ground cherries are sweet, tart, and wildly easy to growβeven in pots.
Plant them once and they'll self-seed like champs (in warm zones).
A permaculture dream you may have never heard of! π

Potted ground cherries, or also called husk cherries beginning to stretch out their limbs and leaves. The bigger ones already have fruits forming

I'm impressed with these Aunt Molly's ground cherries. They were volunteer sprouts from old berries from the plant I grew in spring, AND a few weeks ago survived a light frost with only about half the foliage being lost! π±
