"The welfare of a nation can scarcely be inferred from a measurement of national income." Simon Kuznets (inventor of GDP) GDP was introduced as an imperfect measure. It is not supposed to be synonymous with overall economic health. Now that we fully understand the limitations of GDP, we must not continue to hold it as the primary indicator of economic progress.

GDP does NOT measure wellbeing within a country. Good news: There are alternatives! Disclaimer: it is always recommended to check what you're measuring before basing super duper important decisions on the measure. scientist rebellion_ GROWTH KILLS

Alternative 1: Human Development Index Measures health (life expectancy), education (educational achievement), and income (Gross National Income per capita). PROS Measures some important things that GDP does not Shows economic development does not guarantee social development CONS Doesn't take into account important things like political freedom or the environment The factors it considers are very Global North centric and may not measure experiences of people in low-income countries

Alternative 2: Sustainable Development Index • Measures ecological efficiency of human development, recognizing that development must be achieved within planetary boundaries. • Created to update the HDI with the ecological realities.
