“I think the nature of refereeing, doors open up all the time, and they close in other ways. I just love refereeing, and I want to ref as long as I can. In the men’s game, I’d love to keep progressing more, more Currie Cup games, more URC, perhaps a bit of World Rugby Assistant Refereeing, it’s a different challenge. I don’t want to use the women’s game as a stepping stone into the men’s game.” 2025 gsport Global Woman in Sport Award winner, Aimee Barrett-Theron #QOTD #gsportArchive #IWD26 #GiveToGain

gsport's Quote of the Day

The many amazing girls and women featured across gsport pages since we began writing about them in 2006 have one thing in common - skin in the game. Their life stories, experiences and learnings are a rich source of community wealth, and there is nothing gsport likes to do more than empower those among us in need of a step up to leap over a hurdle.

Today gsport first spoke to Lobisa Maine two years ago, and back then she described herself as: "I’m 19-years-old I’m from Phokeng in Rustenburg. I’m currently studying Sports Science at University of Pretoria (Tuks). I’m a hard worker; I constantly work to create and maintain a positive atmosphere for players both on and off the court. I’m passionate about basketball and have to work extremely hard to get to where I am."

In this selected quote from the interview, she discusses the practicalities of the concept of becoming comfortable with discomfort. This is where the win - which sometimes follows years later - is earned.

Lobisa says: “Get comfortable with pain, prioritise mental fitness and face your worst fears because there are no concrete requirements to becoming a professional player. It’s just a matter of being consistent and humble. All shall work out.”

“Avoid making the sponsorship about what the sponsor will help you achieve, and focus on how you can help them reach their goals. Your sponsor is essentially paying you to market their company, and you know best how you can put those funds to use, so keep that in mind when negotiating a sponsorship deal.“ Dudu Sukazi #QOTD #TBT #gsportArchive
