a frozen Lonely Lake on the Gunflint trail on a sunny winter day. Blue skies with small white clouds framed by fir trees view across the lake with the south ridge visible on the far side.

Late March, took a chance and came up to the Gunflint Trail #gunflinttrail for some late season skiing and hiking. Missed the big storms down south over the weekend and now it’s going below 0F but 40’sF by end of week.

The water in the lake reflects blue sky above at the bottom right of the photo and begins to reflect the orange towards the middle. Two small islands are on the lake. Steam is rising off the far end of the lake.

This was a pretty spectacular view to take in the morning. 10/4/24.

The Magnetic Rock section of the Border Route and North Country Trails opens up to rocky outcroppings with views of the semi-mountainous terrain of the Gunflint Trail. The narrow trail is bordered by spruce and jack pine. Hikers approach one of rocky outcroppings with small mountains in the distance.

We'd planned on skating the Gunflint Lodge's ice trails, but alas weather didn't cooperate this time around.

Instead we took a hike out to Magnetic Rock. Quite possibly the best hike in all of Minnesota.
