haida ermine in winter coat; pure white except for a black tail tip. during the summer, it is brown with a white underside and same black tail tip. all three stoat species have this same general coloration including seasonal color change, but the haida ermine appears to have a slightly darker summer coat, and comparatively slightly shorter tail. the three species are morphologically very similar; the haida ermine is officially distinguished mostly by the elongated skull in its morphology. it is thought to be a result of hybrid speciation between the eurasian and american ermines. like other weasels, it has a long body and short legs. photographs of its summer coat seem to currently only be of deceased specimens.
