P1: I was dumb not to mention it but the commissioner’s idea was to build on my precious idea of a SC Cole in the future. I was given the StarCraft concept art as basis but I took a lot of liberties since I found it a little too tattered. For Cole’s piece, I decided to take a little bit of everything from different points in his life from Blackwatch to Overwatch 2, trying to combine pieces of them together. I found one commonality, which is that he doesn’t do coats but does with capes and off-shoulder drapes, so that was ultimately what he got instead of a coat like Jack. Something we wanted to do was making some parts of his SC uniform to be intentionally symbolic. For example, his chest plate has scuffs and dents to symbolize his personal resilience. The dirty, tattered white wrapping is remnants of the white flag that I imagined burned during the conflict at Switzerland when Overwatch fell for the first time to symbolize a lesson and continuation of the line. For Hanzo, the idea was always the Scion look BUT I personally had my problems with it because it looked goofy with the random leather pads and the metal stuff. It didn’t really speak of a man who’s been raised in finery and who’d know the luxury of a good suit. But as a kumicho, he also is intentional in his own symbolism. So, I decided to smoothen out and simplify the suit but that he’d wear a haori to symbolize his new status as Vice SC. The haori itself was my attempt to bridge his standard kyudo-gi look and his white-orange shimadagumi look in his youth. Again, the idea was to sort of show growth and reconciling of his past. That being said, for practicality, Hanzo is someone I see who would remove his haori when he’s ‘off the clock’ and goes to get coffee/lunch for them. He definitely has a better time leaving the office since no one’s missing Cole in his getup.
P2: I wanted to show that by the end, a lot of the actual leather and metal components in the pieces had to be rendered and painted over. Line art, for me, has its merits but with the program I’m using, there’s a limit to how crisp the lines get at a small pixel, so if I used thin lines to let me render things better, the line art suffers, but if I kept myself within what I had inked down with a sizable brush, I would have gotten pretty meh and inconsistent designs. Idk why but shoes and like metal things speak to me better as paintings. A part of me was trying to challenge myself by sticking inside of the lines but at the end of the day, I owed it to the client to make sure that each little detail wasn’t being skimmed over. And I liked the end result. It came out really well in my opinion.
P3: I just think that bsky didn’t do a good job highlighting details like how Hanzo’s harness is snakeskin to go with the dragon theme. Also, I wanted to say that they had matching necklaces here as a sign of their relationship. It’s supposed to be sakuras and a camellia, maybe someday I’d use it elsewhere! But yeah, I couldn’t find a way to put rings on them at this point but I still wanted that little detail that they’re a stable couple somewhere. In these outfits, I picture both of them to be DOMs, co-domming a couple of people before they then do versa-switch things with each other for an adoring crowd.
P4: I kinda wanted to end at this note that I’m glad that skit and some of y’all noticed the expression, at the end of it all, I wanted to make their relationship feel palpable. For me, what I wanted to covey was that Hanzo’s really comfortable in their arrangement and that he’s actually really playful as a person. Sort of Cat on the Streets, Pup on a leash kind of guy with Cole. He’s stoic but not unapproachable in public, now that he has to be Vice SC, but I still see Cole being one of the few people who get to see his inner self, who is probably just a big dork. It totally went over my head to add like speech bubbles and stuff…whoops…but in my head, I was just thinking of Cole being informed by his husband that everyone was waiting for him in the conference room and Cole, already a little tired, asks him for a little ‘friendly fire’ to inspire him, a small gun show if you will, and after Hanzo makes sure no one’s around, gives the SC what he wants to get him through the day. Also, side note, I gave Cole grills. Thank you again to Skit for trusting me with this!
