Yesterday, Mayor Mamdani put forth an action plan to end five years of emergency orders that suspended basic jail rules & blocked the implementation of #HALTsolitary. Along with ending solitary confinement, the mayor must now get the city back on track to #ShutRikers.

DOCCS committee recommends weakening law against solitary confinement The state prison agency encouraged the state Legislature to consider tweaks to the law that would make it easier to put people in solitary confinement.

“After brutally murdering Robert Brooks and Messiah Nantwi, it is beyond credulity for DOCCS and the corrections unions to be trying to roll back basic protections of the rights of incarcerated people" said Jerome Wright from the #HALTsolitary campaign.

Solitary confinement continues in state prisons despite court order, attys say — Queens Daily Eagle Prisoners continue to be illegally held in solitary confinement a month after a judge ordered prison officials to comply with state required prisoner protections, legal advocates said.

Incarcerated people are being illegally held in solitary confinement even after a judge ruled last month that DOCCS must roll back the emergency suspension of HALT and comply with the state law to limit the use of solitary confinement. #HALTsolitary

Seven Prisoners Die as New York Guard Strikes Cause Widespread Disarray (Gift Article) Thousands of corrections officers at dozens of prisons have been protesting working conditions in wildcat strikes across the state.

Seven people are dead, and New York leaders must stand up for human rights.

Correcting staff shortages and forced 24-hour shifts: there's a clear connection to labor rights.

But suspending #HALTSolitary, or rolling back reforms, has nothing to do with labor rights—or safety.

Instead of capitulating and rolling back #HALTsolitary, the Gov. And NY legislature should work to protect incarcerated people and increase oversight and accountability of DOCCS.

One step they can take right now is passing legislation S856/A2315 to expand the State Commission of Correction.

Council, public advocate sue NYC Mayor Adams over order suspending solitary confinement ban The mayor signed the emergency executive order on July 27 which suspended elements of Local Law 42, arguing safety in the city’s jails was at stake.

The mayor is “desperately trying to maintain a status quo on Rikers that is dangerous to people on both sides of the bars.”
