Author: Charles Bukowski
Novel: Ham On Rye
It’s Bukowski at his best in my opinion. A fun coming of age, irreverent, crass, and filled with “juice.” According to Bukowski, juice is the thing which compels you to turn the page.

Charles Bukowski (1920-1992) was an American writer of poetry, fiction, and a long-running column. On the cover photo, he's center right. His world was the dark underside of American life, mostly Los Angeles. His subject was invariably himself, first by his own name and then by the pseudonym of Henry Chinaski (his first name was Henry). Most of his work is about him drinking, fucking, and playing the horses. Some of his writing was tunred into moderately successful movies in English and other languages. The best of these was "Barfly" starring Mickey Rourke and a badly miscast Faye Dunaway. Rourke's portrayal was the most accurate of the actors who played him, although Rourke did not phsycially resemble Bukowski in the least. My favorite work of his is the short story "Angel in the Outfield" about an "angel" who reverses the fortunes of a last-place baseball team. The story stands out because it's unlike any of his other writings. See if you can find it.
