The irony is the fishing in the broader #HaurakiGulf will be better with the #MarineReserves in place than without them including as they act as nurseries for young fish - a safe place to grow.

Can new Hauraki protections bridge the promise vs action gulf? From Auckland University - Comment: We need to stop thinking of the Hauraki Gulf as a backdrop to economic activity and treat new protections as a starting point.

The #HaurakiGulf is a wonder - one of the richest marine environments around our coast.
While we have #NationalParks on land that we treasure, #MarineConservation has been left behind.

For the amount of ill will, aggravation, & reduction in biodiversity outcomes, a simple no to Seafood NZ would have been a better option. Big public support for protection

In this instance commercial fishing was no longer allowed but recreational fishing - with some restrictions - was.
Numbers of species like crayfish continued to fall & were basically non existent, esp when compared to fully protected Tawharanui in the #HaurakiGulf.
