I still remember the words one of my best friends included in the letter I received a month after their untimely death. Somehow, those same words reflect my state of mind: each day has been, and still is, like an endless tunnel I've been running through. I outran another day: today.

"When you weren't here, I managed to outran another day without dealing with your hijinks," Bailey scolded Cosmo. "Why did you think I went to Nevada?"
"I would like to thank you for giving me a home," Cosmo said.
"What?"
"Because I live rent free in your head, 24/7." #hbp148

I tried to outrun the day, but the faster I ran, the more behind I became.

I thought if I ran fast enough, I’d get ahead of my to-do list, but my to-do list was drafted in predictive text and already knew where I’d be—and that I needed better running shoes.

Sitting still on my couch
Sitting still in front of the computer
Sitting still, reading.
Sitting in my car.
Blocking it out.
Blocking it ALL out.
Harnessing hyperfocus to remove me.
Time moving so exorbitantly slow my sitting feels lightspeed.
I don't know what I'm running from, but...

"I outran the day," Keith declared, striding in.

"Explain," I said, coffee in hand, barely awake.

"You ever outrun an ancient 4th-dimensional god?" he boasted, adding to the absurdity of his expression.

"No, and clearly, I'm not on whatever you're on."

I outran another Day and crouched, hiding in the shadows. The cyborg Doris Day clones were shooting any surviving humans they could find. After midnight, I tried again. The Days had all gone, but then I heard:
'Do you feel lucky, punk?'
The Clint Eastwood bots had taken over the hunt.

Approaching the midnight hour. My breath is shallow, my body tired—I slow then stop. “I outran another day,” I say to no one in particular then notice I’m surrounded by a dozen other beasts slinking in the brush, heads bowed in self-reproach. “New day’s begun!” one says and we all run on.

By moving slow
and dreaming big
In reading deep
and living large
Accomplishing
the minor tasks
....
I outran another day.

I got used to running,
From problems,
My past,
My present,
Myself

I got used to running
Avoiding memories
Weaving from lies
It gets tiring
This surviving

I wanted, needed to stop
It happened after
I outran another day
So afraid intuitively
Realizing I wasn't
Even alive

The depression chased me for weeks, biting at my heels with each step I took. Each night while lying awake in bed, I felt like I outran another day.
