So you can make one of these ISA USB cards bootable. I wanted to see if it was another option for the Headstart Explorer. Unfortunately doesn’t boot on the Explorer. But can still be used as a HDD with the driver.

I can’t help but think they were looking at cloning the Tandy when they were designing the Headstart Explorer with its all in one design and built in GUI interface. But without the Tandy video and sound it just can’t compete.

So testing with the PicoMem and Headstart Explorer. Disk functionality and Sound work. Memory extensions do not. This is a big help to this machine considering it only has one ISA slot.

Sadness. Doesn’t look like the Headstart Explorer likes the PicoMem card.

It’s work! This Deadstart Explorer is alive. Boots right into its “Bulletin Board” GUI system and an imbedded in ROM DOS 3.31. Looks like they tried to mimic Tandy and their Deskmate.

Inspecting the Headstart Explorer. This things has not seen the light. Original battery still in. No HDD but looks like it’s ESDI – which is problematic to replace. Nice to see standard ISA – even if it’s only one slot on a rise.

Time to unbox this Headstart Explorer. Apparently it was bought new but was never used and has been in storage for the past 35 years. The box is worn and a little banged up but the computer is in there and still wrapped.

Picked this surprising local pickup for #DOScember a Headstart Explorer. An odd XT clone in an odd case format pretty late to the game. This is supposed to be new in box. Let’s see what we have.
