You Cannot Control Grant Cycles, Political Climates, or Partner Behavior. But You Can Control How You Treat Your Staff. You can lead with compassion, not urgency. You can make space for grief, joy, and rest. You can build a culture where people feel safe speaking up. You can center healing for survivors and your team, too.
We know you can’t always control funding, demand, or when the next crisis will happen.
But you can control how you treat your staff.
Anti-violence work must also be anti-harm. Start with what’s in your control.

The anger is real. The systems failing our neighbors deserve our rage.
But anger can't sustain this work. Love must be our fuel.

END/ The question becomes: how do we build more spaces where people feel safe enough to move from survival mode into our full potential? Because to heal our collective nervous system, we are going to have to do this together. 💚

A complex systems map titled 'Wellbeing and Resilience: A grounded theory using a trauma-informed lens for a healing-centered peacebuilding approach.' The map branches into three main approaches, represented by different colored icons: A blue 'Psychosocial Programming Approach,' a red 'Ignore It Approach,' and a green 'A Healing-Centered Peacebuilding Approach.' The map also includes a purple 'Mental Health Approach.' Each branch contains numerous illustrated elements showing various aspects like community engagement, mental health support, and conflict resolution. The left side shows challenges and interventions, while the right side shows healing and positive outcomes. Multiple small illustrations depict people in various situations, from community meetings to healing activities. The map includes both problematic approaches to avoid and constructive solutions to implement. A credit line indicates this is from research by A. Yoder-Maina, 2020, at the Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
#HealingCentered #peacebuilding is strength-based. It recognises systems and structures supporting recovery and rebuilding are often greatly damaged by the same violence and #trauma.
Key to the approach is interventions are not just about raising awareness but behavior change.
We are so used to hearing about #trauma or #coping responses. But have you heard about #healingcentered responses?
For the past week after my mastectomy, #flocking has been a gift and a deeply held practice. Really flexing the #TendAndBefriend responses. #WeHealAsCommunity

5/9 Our journey towards a just society is #HealingCentered. We adopt a strength-based, holistic, & multicultural approach. Together, we work to prevent & heal trauma, both individual & collective. Through nurturing relationships & restorative processes, we create possibilities.

A child is not "bad" or "naughty" - but instead could be having a natural response to distress, adversity, and hardship.
When we understand that the nervous system drives how we feel, think, and behave, we can address these behavioral challenges at the root!

"Connection is why we are here. We are hardwired to connect with others, it is what gives purpose and meaning to our lives, and without it there is suffering.”

#healingcentered #education is different. How can we start to change the narrative?
A #healingcentered approach views trauma not simply as an individual isolated experience, but rather highlights the ways in which trauma & healing are experienced collectively
A #healingcentered approach is holistic involving culture, spirituality, civic action & collective healing.

5/ According to my experience and research there are three mainstream responses: the mental health approach, the psychosocial approach, and the “ignore it” approach. Alternatively, #healingcentered peacebuilding is a lens used to address the complexity of chronic violence.
