‘Herbert Bayer (1900-1985) Artistic polymath Herbert Bayer was one of the Bauhaus’s most influential students, teachers, and proponents, advocating the integration of all arts throughout his career. Bayer began his studies as an architect in 1919 in Darmstadt. From 1921 to 1923 he attended the Bauhaus in Weimar, studying mural painting with Vasily Kandinsky and typography, creating the Universal alphabet, a typeface consisting of only lowercase letters that would become the signature font of the Bauhaus. In 1938 Bayer emigrated to the United States and remained in America working as a graphic designer for the remainder of his career.’ https://poulwebb.blogspot.com/2021/01/fortune-magazine-part-3.html

Two cut paper pieces with openings reminiscent of negatives with pink ribbon threaded through them by Kimberly Hahn flank a work on paper by Herbert Bayer with a black rectangle surrounded by golden yellow, orange, red, blue, green, and yellow with graduations in hues. The rectangles of color shift slightly to be askew from the black rectangle and make the portal or gate appear to twist. This work is entitled Chromatic Gate. All are on display at the Santa Barbara County Office of Art and Culture's Channing Peake Gallery Form and Frame exhibition through January 2026
Hangin' with #HerbertBayer 's #ChromaticGate. I am honoured. My works ( #EverythingLeft ) are little seen from the Michael & Nancy Gifford Collection at the #SantaBarbara County Office of Art and Culture. They are constructed with cut paper & ribbon. Check them out at the Channing Peake Gallery!
