Hexham - Jim Edwards
Original painting, acrylic on board (50x50cm), framed.
I’ve had to make an adjustment to the sky on this one, I was compelled to paint it dark pink. The sky’s unchanged on the prints.

The #DanceOfDeath panels, painted around 1500, depict skeletal Death confronting figures of power such as a king, emperor, cardinal, and pope. These striking images, housed at #HexhamAbbey, highlight a powerful medieval theme: the inevitability of death, regardless of rank or station. #Totentanz

The lavatorium, part of remains of 13th C rebuilding of the #Saxon Benedictine monastery at #HexhamAbbey.
Facilities beside refectory in the Early English style cloister, where monks washed before meals, largely dismantled in a spate of Reformation stone quarrying.
View of Hexham Abbey, in Northumberland, from beside the Bowling Green and Hexham House. The Abbey is bathed in lovely late afternoon sunlight, against a clear blue cloudless sky backdrop.

Hexham Abbey 15th & 20th century interior view of the Nave, from underneath the Crossing bell tower & Organ. This area of the Abbey was destroyed (the Abbey having already been raided by William Wallace aka Braveheart in 1297, and Robert the Bruce in 1311) after being sacked by the Scottish army under the King David II. The Name was rebuilt in 1907/1908
Hexham Abbey 12th century interior view of the High Altar and Choir with its 15th century choir stalls. The Great East Window having fallen down in 1828 was rebuilt in 1829 and then again in 1858 under the guidance of the architect John Dobson

Here's to 2025 and a new year (not long now...). Hopefully next year you'll find a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow...

Hexham Abbey in Northumberland almost lost from view in a heavy snowstorm
13/24 / In the UK (excluding upland areas), it's statistically more likely that you'll see snow at Easter than on Christmas Day BUT only when Easter is in March... #hexhamabbey #northumberland #adventcalendar #christmascountdown #northumberland #photography #unitedkingdom #winterweather
What an excellent performance of #TheMessiah by @WildArts in #HexhamAbbey tonight. Sung beautifully and staged with real sensitivity to the building.

The town of Hexham and Hexham Abbey at dusk, with the valley covered in snow.
4/24 / Christmas in Hexham just got a bit merrier this year. The town – rightly, but I'm biased! – is number three on the 2024 list of 'The happiest places to live in the UK', according to Rightmove... #hexham #hexhamabbey #tynedale #christmascountdown #adventcalendar #architecturalphotography
