"Tenderness of Vilnius" When the fourteenth century entered into its full flower — or rather, yet entereth, for time passeth not, but only revealeth itself — as I journeyed through the Lithuanian lands, I encountered in Vilna a wondrous image, which the folk there have named 'Tenderness.' There appeared before me a lady, arrayed after the custom of that age which simultaneously is and shall be: upon her shoulders lay a veil most long, fine and light as an evening breath, which toucheth not, but only promiseth. Her gown was rich, falling in folds like a quiet river that beareth not water, but peace. She stood not as a shadow of the past, but as a living presence — restrained, gentle, yet steadfast in her dignity. — 'Have you not lost your way in time, good sir?' she spake softly. — 'When I stand beside you, it seemeth I have found it,' I replied. And in that moment I perceived: tenderness is neither weakness nor a phantom. It is a form of strength that requireth no proof and vanisheth not, even when eyes are turned away.

Постала перед очима моїми жона благочестива, вбрана за звичаєм і гонором віку того, що водночас і в минувшині перебуває, і в прийдешньому сіяє. На раменах її — вуаль предовга, наче серпанок досвітній, тонка та легка, мов подих зефіру, що ледве торкається єства, лише обітницю спокою даруючи. Шати ж її вельми пишні, хвилями каскадними спадаючі, подібні до тихої ріки, що не води мутні, а саму тишу смиренну несе. Стояла вона не як мара чи тінь минувша, а як присутність жива та суща — в дивній стриманості лагідна, проте непохитна у своїй природній гідності, наче колона храму невидимого. — «Чи не в лабіринтах часу ви, добродію, зблукали?» — мовила вона гласом тихим, наче шелест пергаменту. — «Коли перед світлим ликом вашим стою — то, мниться мені, на решті шляху правдивого знайшовся», — відповів я з поклоном низьким. І в тую ж мить збагнув я серцем: ніжність — то не слабкість єсть і не примара марнотна. То є найвища форма сили небесної, що жодних доказів земних не потребує.
