2.5-minute rapid scan #Himawari9 Visible images provided a phenomenal view of low-altitude mesovortices within the eye of Category 5 Super Typhoon #Ragasa, as the storm center approached islands within the Luzon Strait (between Taiwan and the Philippines).
2.5-minute rapid scan #Himawari9 Infrared images showed Super Typhoon #Ragasa as it reached Category 5 intensity at 0600 UTC on 21 September. There was a ~1 hour gap in 2.5-minute Target Sector images -- so 10-minute Full Disk images were substituted during the gap.
2.5-minute rapid scan #Himawari9 Visible and Infrared images showed the first few hours after sunrise on Category 4 Typhoon #Ragasa in the Philippine Sea. A partially-clearing eye is occasionally revealing the presence of low-altitude mesovortices.

The image shows a curved earth horizon, viewing towards Antarctica and clouds over the ocean south of Australia. The bottom of the image is dark. Going up we pass the terminator and enter sunlight. The horizon is brighly lit, with the blackness of space above it. Here the image shows a number of thin blueish streaks which are noctilucent clouds. The Himawari 9 satellite is positioned in a geostationary location over the western Pacific Ocean. The satellite is operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The world is becoming a terrifying place, but let’s talk nevertheless for a moment about a wonder of nature: noctilucent clouds (#nlc). They form over high geographical latitudes during midsummer. The image shows nlcs over Antarctica on 27 January 2025 seen by #Himawari9 satellite. 1/7
