I recently joined the Scientific Instrument Society and they sent me one of their recent bulletins as a welcoming gift. I am so pleased to open it and to see @stephenaj.bsky.social's article on Astrolabes on the first page ❤️ #EarlyModern #MedievalSky #HistSci #HistTech #HisSTM 🗃️

I'll be examining various 15th-18thc objects (clocks, locks, astrolabes, sundials, astronomical compendia & microscopes) through hands-on engagement, various kinds of analyses, as well as historical reconstruction. In other words: I'll be making screws! 🔩 #EarlyModern #MedievalSky #HistSci #HisSTM 🗃️

On my way to #ESEH2025 in Uppsala. Happy to chair two sessions and present on history of German weather & climate science. Took the train via Hamburg/Copenhagen, and very happy that I had time to do slow travel. A bit sad because the train before us hit an elk.😭 #envhis #hisstm

Oh, interesting! The Ordnance is a fascinating site, or set of sites, for #hisSTM (has a chapter in my book, but that only touches on parts of it)

#Skystorians, esp. historians of science, astrology & astronomy: This may be revealing of my ignorance, but were zodiac signs "standardized" in #EarlyModern Europe? I.e. were the symbols for, for instance, gemini, aries, libra, the same across place & time? Or were there variations? #HistSci #HisSTM

Earlier this week we shared the news that digitization of physicist John Wheeler's notebooks had been completed. This also included some of his student report cards. As you can see, he was doing "excellent" work even in second grade! #hisSTM #historyofscience #physics

What does a British teashop have to do with the history of computing? In 1884, Joseph Lyons founded a teashop in Piccadilly, London. By 1939, Lyons had 250 locations around the UK and employed 30,000 people, including 1,500 in accounting to support the supply chains & logistics.. 🧵 #Histtech #HisSTM
