Let's get real here. There's a lot going on. A whole bunch of craziness has coalesced in the past few days: Sauron Vought and Sauruman Theil are trying to craft a Seeing Stone using the Precious stolen by Smeagol Musk to create an Orcdriven system of One Data to Rule Them All. The Elves and Men are distracted and disorganized and afraid and self-interested. Everyone's a bit high strung and neurotic. And here are we Hobbits. Insignificant gardeners, writers, travelers, taletellers, dragon teasers, tree friends, readers, teachers, neighbors, (Witch) King hobblers, wizard annoyers, librarians, curators, troublemakers, life appreciaters, humor makers, protectors, with furry toes and big appetites for food and thought and beauty and goodness and community. There will be difficulties. There will be sacrifices. We will seem unbearably small. But we are terribly hard to crush. We are in this together, fellow Tooks and Proudfoots, Bagginses and Gamgees, Cottons and Brandybucks. We can encourage each other at the same time we stubbornly refuse to bow to the Eye. And we do so in the ways we are most suited and able. We cannot all run armed against the Orcs or methodically destroy the One Data; some must stay to tend the Shire, to protect what must not be lost. So. All of this rather bumbling metaphor is to remind you: we still have beauty and humor and curiosity; there are more of us than them; and we can turn the wheels in unexpected directions while the great look elsewhere.
