I decided to make flower necklaces instead for the gifts for the gallery but I wanted to complete the amphora I started in order to learn about making amphora shapes. I like the looks for my first one- hand fabricated copper #amphora #jewelrycraft #vessel #copper #metalsmith #hollowform #learning

Gray oak burl. Most of these have had mistletoe in them. The roots of the mistletoe grow into the cambial layer where cells divide and distort, with the inner one becoming xylem, or wood, and the outer one becoming bark. The tree sends tannin to the injury.

Oak, likely emory oak based on where this was found. Dead and down, and quite dry except where the branch was on the ground, so no leaves to help id. No. 1293.

To get my mind off the distressing national scene, for hope I look back to things I made long ago, and things I make today. This is from 1991. Box elder burl, from a windfall in 1989 in Loveland, CO.

A dozen years ago I cast several Coulter pine cones and made some vessels. If it is just a thin slice of the scale, the cast stays stable. If I cast the whole cone, it keeps moving. A vacuum kiln to dry the cone would sure help.

For several years this grey oak branch burl was submerged in a steel barrel during which time the tannin in the wood reacted with the iron in the water. This is my first piece of 2015, and is 11-1/2" diameter and 10-1/2" high at the high point of the bark rim.

Gray oak. Some of these (nine) kept the bark on the rim, others did not. Rough turned on two centers back in the 90s, then finish turned on two centers, many years later. The area between got carved out.

Long dead and down with barnwood gray where the bark was gone, this oak branch, likely emory, produced all four of these pieces. The wood was very hard, very close to blowing up, and had a couple small pockets of residual moisture.

Gray #oak #vessel, aka #hollowform. No cracks or checks in the knots where the branch went in and out of the little burl. It's 5-3/4 x 5-3/4".
