Photo of the Cracow copy of the Vienna Holy Lance.
Yet a 10th century replica of the #HolyLance, one of two copies Otto III had made for the monarchs of Poland and Hungary respectively, supposedly also transferring small traces of the original relic into both, is today exhibited in #Cracow.
Close-up photo of the Vienna Holy Lance's golden sleeve and its inscription.
Only in the 13th century that #HolyLance finally has been linked to the weapon of #Longinus which pierced the side of Christ - so now it's him mentioned by name on the golden sleeve.
Photo of the individual pieces of the disassembled Holy Lance from Vienna: the lance itself and to sleeves of metal sheets, one silver with golden rim and another silver one.
This #HolyLance was first said to be the lance of #SaintMaurice - and an original silver sleeve (underneath the golden one seen today) explicitly mentions him by name … as well as a #nail, used for the crucifixion of Jesus, which was believed to have been embedded into the tip.
Photo of a large lance head covered in a golden sleeve on display in a museum case.
The probably best known #HolyLance, and the one Indy deals with, is the relic today on display in the treasury of #Vienna's Hofburg. According contemporary sources, Holy Roman Emperors came into its possession in the 10th century - later making it part of the Imperial Regalia.
Photo of a rhombic spear tip with cross shape cut into its blade, presented in an open reliquary.
And a #HolyLance described as "the spear which pierced Jesus" in a 13th century manuscript comes from the monastery of #Geghard in #Armenia.
Enshrined in a 17th-century reliquary it is on display at the #ManoogianMuseum in #Vagharshapat (previously: #Echmiadzin) today.
Line drawing of a spear respectively spearhead with what seems to be part of its shaft. The spear's upper tip is missing, broken off.
Another of these #HolyLance relics, first mentioned in AD 570, was stored in #Constantinople for a long time. Its tip has been sold to Louis IX of #France, but later disappeared.
The larger part ended up in #Rome and is kept underneath Saint Peter's Basilica today.
Drawing illustrating the discovery of the Holy Lance of Antioch: a lot of people gathering in what seems to be the inside of a large cathedral, they are praying and in awe - watching a dignitary in ecclesiastical vestments presenting a spear.
One such #HolyLance is said to have been discovered by a monk (after the location allegedly was revealed to him in a vision) during the Siege of #Antioch in 1098.
Sources mentioning such an object go back as far as the 10th century, but its whereabouts today are unknown.
As usually in such a case, there's not one, not two, no!, several candidates claiming the title of the 🙌 True™ #Relic of The #HolyLance which pierced the side of #Christ and touched His blood 🙌 …

"Wait, what #HolyLance?!" you ask? 🤔
Well, yes - *that* #lance of the Roman soldier #Longinus which, according legend and lore, once pierced 🩸 the side of Jesus at the Crucifixion:

Screenshot from "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny". A younger Indy in a Wehrmacht uniform (with stained bullet hole) is sitting on a chair, a lit fireplace can be seem in the background.
The year is 1944, #IndianaJones infiltrates a Nazi-occupied castle (in that #DialOfDestiny opening, remember?) to find the Lance of #Longinus which (alleged- or supposedly) once opened the side of Christ following his crucifixion.
Alas, the artifact turns out … just a replica of the #HolyLance. 🤷🏻♂️

When in Vienna ... you of course also are obliged to pay a visit to the Hofburg’s treasury and marvel, awestruck, at - The #HolyLance. 😲😲😲
