We were clearing out trash from an area last weekend, and I found this start of a hornet’s nest (the hanging football kind). They chew wood, and cough it up as a papery glue. This is the very top. They probably stopped b/c of the heat.
Now that it's winter, the abodes created by the bald-faced hornets are much more visible in the trees. They really are amazing structures that can house up to 700 hornets!
