“An Omen,” aka “analog(oblivion) 013c” analog VHS/CRT glitch art by Rob Sheridan, 2012. A shadowy figure behind a chain link fence. Capturing the glitching process off the television screen with a DSLR camera in continuous shooting mode was key to unlocking the moments of unique distortions happening faster than the naked eye could comprehend. The eeriness of VHS distortions on CRT screens is a more familiar pop culture aesthetic today (especially in horror movies), but in 2012 it wasn’t something seen in print media, especially music. I found that even without that media language to draw from, the texture of VHS was inseparable from our formative encounters with horror; it tugged at the roots of fear deep in our subconscious, creating the atmosphere of ominous dread we were seeking for the EP. The source material I was glitching for “An Omen” - (mostly stills pulled from old public domain films) was all in black and white, but the camera picked up the television screen with a cold blue tint, occasionally pierced by daggers of red and green distortions. It became the perfect monochromatic mood to set the tone for the vibrant colors I’d utilize later in the full “Welcome Oblivion” album.
