A highlight of Cairns and the #ibrc2025 was to easily find the spectacled flying fox (Pteropus conspicillatus) flying around the convention center at night. Some were coming to feed and offered unbeatable opportunities to see them just a few meters above our heads.
This species is also known as
Bianca has landed in #Vanuatu! π¦
On Nguna Island, sheβll join day & night bat surveys with local rangers, exploring unique bat habitats, supporting local conservation efforts, and connecting with communities.
A fantastic and unique field trip organised through #IBRC2025

We just made it back from Australia. We had a few days to explore around Cairns after the #ibrc2025 and encounter some awesome wildlife. I also had the great opportunity to visit @tolgabathospital and photograph some of their bats, including this Queensland tube-nosed bat (Nyctimene robinsoni).

Danielle Eastick π¦πΊ looked at long term data sets of bat π¦ mortality in Australian wind π¨ farms. 42% White striped free tailed bat & 21% Gouldβs Wattle bat. 78% found within 60m of turbine. Estimated mortality rate 9.9 bats/turbine/year. 24% in March π @ibrc2025.bsky.social #ibrc2025
Next Stevie Florent π³πΏ looked to create benchmarks for detecting rates π¦ and carcass persistence at wind π¨ farm in Australia π¦πΊ . Dogs π much better at finding bats than humans! Cleared ground carcass last longer than non cleared. Not enough data π on mortality in NZ @ibrc2025.bsky.social #ibrc2025
@emmateeling.bsky.social at #IBRC2025. Healthy ageing and longevity. @ibrc2025.bsky.social
Another remarcable talk by my amazing daughter Amaranta Ortiz Gomez at the #ibrc2025 showing that the work of volunteers is relentless: 8 volunteers each invests 300 days a year looking after microbats. Collectively have cared for more than 1200 bats in the past 6 years
Another great talk about bat rehabilitation at the #ibrc2025. Robin Rowland brightened my day! She followed bats released in SE QLD and found that the effort and money volunteers invest in rehabilitating bats is worth it!
Teague OβMara from @batcon.org looked at international data of altitude of wind π¨ turbines and bats π¦. He looked at data π & found bats fly & spend lot of time in danger βοΈ zone of turbines consistently. More sampling needed. Could on-demand shutdowns work? @ibrc2025.bsky.social #ibrc2025
