Behind every missing data point is a person—one who is often isolated and suffering. Beyond #PrideMonth and #ImmigrantHeritageMonth, it is essential that we advocate for stronger standards of care, especially now given the heightened risks faced by transgender people in detention.

La Gran Marcha 2006On May 1, 2006, an estimated 2 million people across the country took part in a day of action collectively known as “La Gran Marcha” or “The Great March” – one of the largest demonstrations for immigrants’ rights in U.S. history. These mass demonstrations were in response to anti-immigrant legislation known as HR 4437, the Sensenbrenner Bill. The proposed bill would have made unauthorized entrance into the U.S. a felony and put the safety of millions of undocumented immigrants at risk. Immigrant-led organizing eventually led to the mega-march of 2006 and the defeat of the bill.

The #DREAMer MovementThe #DREAMer movement took off in the early 2000s, when undocumented youth courageously demanded access to higher education and a pathway to citizenship. In 2001, NILC helped draft the first version of the bipartisan DREAM Act.In the years that followed, undocumented youth organized tirelessly, ultimately paving the way for the creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in 2012.Since then, anti-immigrant politicians have relentlessly attacked the program — yet immigrant youth, many now adults, continue to lead the fight for a pathway to citizenship.

Chinatown Garment Workers’ StrikeIn the summer of 1982, over 20,000 garment workers – most of them Chinese immigrant women – took to the streets of New York City’s Chinatown on strike for better workplace conditions, benefits, and fair wages.
Several Chinatown employers refused to renew a contract with the International Ladies Garment Workers’ Union with adequate wages, vacation and sick leave, and other benefits for workers.
