The Professors of Deep Field Navigation consider Ptolemy’s one thousand and twenty-two stars to be a quaint exercise — something you memorise during orientation, between the hull breach drill and the tour of the Carl Sagan Star Stuff Cosmoteria (billions and billions served). You will be asked to chart a star and you will chart it where you see it. This is where it was. It is not where it is. To find where it is, you will need to know how far away it is. To find how far away it is, you will need to know where it is. This is the first problem. The second problem is that the star has moved while you were solving the first problem. The final exam requires charting your answers in 2, 3, 4, and 9 dimensions. I did it in one. (ap·dt)
The hardships those first #stellar cartographers must have faced. Yes, the earth space cartographers, certainly, but also the space ones, the speculative ones I'm science fictioning about. Space is cold, space cadets.
