My first international conference experience: ISGS 2025
Presented our research on deep learning methods for sign language recognition in Netherlands. The interest and feedback from the academic community was incredible!
This is just the beginning #AI #signlanguage #ISGS2025
Almost the end of July but CLA doen’t stop! 💥 Florence Baills presented at #ISGS2025 (Gesture Society) her poster "Exploring future Spanish as a foreign #language_teachers' use of #gesture for #prosodic instruction"➡️there’s room for training to boost impact!🚀
Had an incredible time at #isgs2025! I loved meeting so many new people in gesture/sign language studies. Can’t wait for the next in Hong Kong!
Just wrapped up #ISGS2025, where we presented our symposium, organized by Şeyda Özçalışkan and Maria Graziano. We explored gestures in disfluent speech across languages, learner types, and communicational settings. Grateful to my colleagues who made it possible.
🌟The closing session of #ISGS2025 has officially concluded—thank you to all our speakers, presenters and attendees!
See you at ISGS11 in Hong Kong 🌟
A great end to #ISGS2025 with a keynote by Lorna Quandt on embodied approaches to sign language!
@lornaquandt.bsky.social
Sho presents his work validating dynamic time warping to a rapt #ISGS2025 audience. Lots of engagement afterwards #ProudSupervisor
I am sorry to miss the end of the conference and stopping my live-skeeting, but thank you so much to everyone organising #isgs2025 @isgs2025.bsky.social. It's been a blast and very inspiring.
I don't know what's next for me but if this is my last academic conference, I'm really glad I could make it
#isgs2025 "Co-enactment in Flemish Sign Language: Joint stance-taking in action" - Fien Andries
Co-enacted completions re-shape the stance object (w B enacting internal thoughts)
Forms of multimodal co-stacking, and iterative process of re-shaping and re-evaluating the object/event
#isgs2025 "Computer Vision for Quantification of Facial Gestures During Repair" Cullen & Healey
Computer vision study of facial expressions by listeners at the reparandum transition space
FCA of clusters of dynamic characteristics such as eyebrow furrow, lateral gaze, blinking
#isgs2025 "Gestural Patterns in Dialogue Interpreting (...)" - Chwalczuk et al
Experiment: are interpreters' gestures driven by speaker (if visible)
More pragmatic gestures
Alignment w visible speaker: finger count, deictics, iconics
Not visible speaker: interpr uses iconics but fewer gestures
#isgs2025 "Patterns of gesture in conversations involving adults with acquired hearing impairment and their frequent communication partners" - Sparrow, Lind & van Steenbrugge
Studies on gesture rate and size in dyads: normal hearing(NH)-NH vs NH-acquired HI
No diffs except in noise conditions
#isgs2025 "Co-speech gestures accompanying linguistic inventions" - Fishman, Gottschalk, Kopp & Cholin
Experiment: reference game w shapes (w diff levels of codability) to induce invention pressure w restrictions on speech/gesture
Higher entropy, restricted gesture: drop in accuracy and speed
#isgs2025 "Emblems and Improvised Gestures are Structured to Guide Their Own Detection"
Royka, Heuser, Schouwstra, Kirby & Jara-Ettinger
Rating of emblematic gestures in terms of "legibility"
Experiment to show "commonsense psychology" for shared understanding and ostensive goal-directed behaviour
#isgs2025 "GestLEX: A Digital Lexicon of Gestures as anInterdisciplinary Model Project"
Fricke, Chuang, Mehler, Bressem, Siefkes, Lücking, Sanseverino & Meiler
The long-term project seeks to create a "gestionary" and "avatarisation" of video data. They will use LLMs to retrieve and pre-analyse data
Are you at #ISGS2025 today? Come see my talk in the kinematics session! I'll present my PhD work validating dynamic time warping (DTW) as a measure of gesture form similarity with manual ratings. We show that DTW can be an efficient, useful proxy for gesture form similarity!
#isgs2025 "Masking and analytics tools for ethical archiving and standardized data processing" -- Owoyele, Schilling, Trujillo, Pouw, de Melo
MaskAnyone tool allows for partial or total de-identification while retaining different levels of kinematic information as chosen by user
#ISGS2025 "The EnvisionBOX co-speech gesture dataset and gesture detector" Shaikh, Pouw, Yung, Trujillo, de Melo, Owoyele
Demo of the HGdetector with the ability to automatically detect (with diff levels of confidence) gesture vs non-gestures on a live-stream.
#isgs2025 "Introducing EnvisionBOX"
Pouw, Trujillo, Ćwiek, Owoyele
Reflections on how much is now being required of PhDs including the large number of skills and awareness of issues. EnvisionBox motivated by pedagogy, community-driven initiatives, open exchange

⏰ Ready for Day 3 of #ISGS2025!
Check out today’s detailed schedule: www.isgs10.nl/conference-p...
Highlights include:
🏛️General Assembly Meeting
🔍Symposia, talk and poster sessions
🌟Keynote by Lorna Quandt
🏆Closing session & announcement of Student Poster Prize
#isgs2025 keynote: "Copilots for Research in Multimodal Communication" - Mark Turner
Overview of tools offered by the Red Hen Lab (www.redhenlab.org) and the Copilot for Linguists book (sites.google.com/view/copilot...)
Day 2 of #ISGS2025 continues with Mark Turner’s keynote on copilot’s for research in multimodal communication
Slide showing findings
#isgs2025 "The multimodal expression of prominence: How children integrate prosody and gesture in marking focus types"
Sara Coego, Núria Esteve-Gibert and Pilar Prieto
#isgs2025 "Not Just Speech, Not Just Sign: Multimodal Prosodic Marking of Contrastive Focus in French and LSFB"
Clara Lombart
Prominence scores assigned based on number of cues
LSFB: Low prominence in pre-focus, high in CF, then low again
French: low, high in CF, high in following context
#isgs2025 "Multimodal Hyperarticulation as focus marking: Temporal alignment of gesture and prosody" - Alina Gregori and Frank Kügler
In contrastive focus:
-Steeper f0 slope in falling contour
-Increased articulatory effort
-Closer apex to accent distance
We are in the 10th Conference of the International Society for Gesture Studies #ISGS2025!
@jiali-li.bsky.social presented about the impact of character viewpoint gestures in adults. A study in collaboration with Pilar Prieto and @ingridvilag.bsky.social
#ISGS2025 "Focus Prominence in an Extended Prosodic Domain in Turkish Sign Language (TİD)" Karabüklü & Gürer
Focus generally marked non-manually in SLs
In TID: greater duration in manual signs
presentational focus: lesser duration in pre-focal domain
contrastive focus: decrease in post-focal domain
#ISGS2025 "Multimodal prosody: Towards a modality-neutral conceptualization of prosody " Prieto, Esteve-Gibert & Shattuck-Hufnagel
Experimental evidence: no parasitic relationship bwn spoken & visual dimensions of prosody but an independent implementation of both modalities
#isgs2025 Mesch:
Tactile STS has more manual backchannel signs and fingerspelling, less gestures and depicting signs than visual STS
Laugher practices: hand/body movement, emphasised signing, + haptic sensation
Deafblind communication invites us to ask and redefine what really counts as a gesture
We are beginning Day 2 with Johanna Mesch’s great keynote on tactile adaptations of gestures and emotions in deafblind communication #ISGS2025
