"Meet the jacana: a bird that defies much of what you thought you knew about nature. With its precise and elegant steps, it appears to walk on water, moving across water lilies and floating leaves as if it were gliding through the air."

Female pheasant-tailed #jacanas are polyandrous, meaning they leave clutches of eggs with different male partners. The fathers, who perform all parental duties including incubation, carry the chicks under their wings, creating the spectacle of a lone bird with multiple legs sticking out of his body.
During the 2000s, hundreds of #jacanas died from ingesting seeds mixed with poisonous grain in an outdated field-sowing practice for deterring birds. Farmers in south #Taiwan have since pivoted to organic practices centered on floating aquatic plants like the mustache nut.
