A gorgeous vintage 1960s 70s handmade painted Japonaiserie Chinoiserie Woman with Fan decoupage design hinged lidded box artwork. Pictured on the top of the box is a figure of a Japanese/Chinese woman with a fan against a hand-painted background of metallic gold under lacquer overpainted with phoenix birds and flowers. The woman is on paper that was then overlaid on top of the underlying lacquered gold with painted phoenix birds and flowers using the decoupage technique. In both Chinese and Japanese cultures, the phoenix, known as Fenghuang in Chinese and Hou-ou in Japanese, is a powerful symbol with deep cultural significance. In Chinese culture, it represents the empress, harmony, prosperity, and good fortune, often paired with the dragon. In Japan, the phoenix also symbolizes good fortune and is associated with the imperial family, the sun, and fire. The implication is that the pictured woman with fan is of noble birth. Very much in the style of the artworks of Japan and China, but made by an admirer from the West in my opinion. The lid of the box is hinged, and there is a small gold colored knob at the front for lifting it. Once opened all the way, it will remain open until closed again. Measures 12" by 8" at top by 3" deep. Lined with black velvet inside. Unmarked as far as I can tell. Has a fabric finish on the bottom that is worn in a couple spots as shown, also there are some small nicks to the edges of the box that aren't noticeable at all when displayed in a case or on a table. Excellent vintage condition.

The scenery on this silver pitcher looks straight out of an impressionist painting, or a lively Japanese print. Water ripples as fish leap out, and a dragonfly swoops down to land upon a blade of grass. Highlights are made using electroplated gold, and copper sourced from the deposits at Lake Superior. This is the work of Tiffany & Co.'s master designer Edward C. Moore and the expert craftsmanship of the Tiffany team.
