Jefferson salamanders are a large mole salamander native to Ontario and the northeastern US. They are a part of the mole salamander family, meaning they typically spend most of their life underground in moist undisturbed soil in woodland habitats - hunting small invertebrates such as worms, slugs, and insects.

Jefferson salamanders are classified as an endangered species in Ontario and other parts of their range due to threats such as road mortality and development of vernal pools, as well as hybridization mixing their genetics.
