Joseph Hewes (1730–1779) was a Quaker-born merchant from North Carolina who overcame his pacifist upbringing to become a strong advocate for independence. As a member of the Continental Congress, he helped organize the Continental Navy, making him one of the founders of the American naval force. Hewes worked tirelessly until his death in 1779, never seeing the full fruits of the independence he helped secure. 5” x 5”, oil on canvas. #josephhewes #americanhistory #americanrevolution #signers #declarationofindependence #portraits #portraitpainting #art #oilpainting #oiloncanvas #smallpaintings
