Carter Braxton (1736–1797) was a wealthy planter, merchant, and statesman from Virginia who signed the Declaration of Independence. Born into a prominent family, Braxton was educated at the College of William and Mary and became involved in colonial politics at a young age. As a delegate to the Continental Congress, he joined in the decision to declare independence, though he initially favored a more cautious approach toward breaking with Britain. Braxton invested much of his personal fortune in supporting the Revolutionary cause, which left him financially strained after the war. Despite his losses, he continued to serve Virginia in public office, remembered as a man who risked wealth and status for the principle of American freedom. 5” X 5”, oil on canvas. #carterbraxton #americanhistory #americanrevolution #signers #declarationofindependence #portraits #portraitpainting #art #oilpainting #oiloncanvas #smallpaintings
