Button Gwinnett (1735–1777) was an English-born merchant who settled in Georgia and became an ardent supporter of independence. Though his political career was brief, he played a key role in drafting Georgia’s first state constitution and served as acting governor. Just a year after signing the Declaration, Gwinnett was killed in a duel with a political rival, making him one of the shortest-lived signers. His rare signature is now one of the most valuable among collectors. 5” x 5”, oil on canvas. #buttongwinnett #americanhistory #americanrevolution #signers #declarationofindependence #portraits #portraitpainting #art #oilpainting #oiloncanvas #smallpaintings
