I try to give a journaling game time to do its thing, but I have quit playing lots of them if they just weren't clicking for me. I'm not sure I've ever table-flipped one though. I'm not sure I've ever been that strongly provoked. Have you ever table-flipped a journaling game?

It's hard to find specifically journaling games in such a large bundle. If you have a journaling game in it, or you've found ones in it, please link me to them.

Thank you 🌞

I entered this because it was quiet last week. Looking at the quality of @comemartin and @arthur and @PaulCzege entries (amongst many others) I'm quite embarrassed I did already.

A home printed copy of Cage of Sand by Luciella Elisabeth Scarlett, along with my current journal, my current orange ink pen, and six face-up cards from the Terra Volatile tarot representing the bodies of murder victims I discover: The Star, the VI of Swords, the Queen of Coins, the Knight of Wands, the King of Swords, and Judgement. It's interesting that all but one of them are Major Arcana. The odds are against that.

It's been a while, but I'm now in Act 3 of @luciellaes.bsky.social's Cage of Sand and discovering the bodies of murder victims. The first of them is The Star, who is my friend Irah I met in Act 2 and who showed me around, and I'm pretty messed up now finding her dead.

A thing about journaling games is there's no urgency of narrative action like when a ttrpg session is a scheduled social event, no urgency to have a certain kind of fun during the scheduled time, so as a designer you can literally expect players to reflect, research, take as much...

The title page of Walden, by Henry D. Thoreau.

Playing an immersive journaling game is an act of entering a world and being created by it as a truer self. There is a compelling history of writing about such experiences. You should consider telling about yours.

Someone asked why I often write "game/zine" in my posts. It's because making journaling games I play and publish is a living metaphysical part of myself. They're not just games. They're not just publications. The making is the self is the game is the zine.

I just read @junkfoodgames.bsky.social's Welthe In Wyzdome, which I have from the Solo But Not Alone bundle last year, and it's pretty minimalist, but I'm definitely now going to play it. You're a vendor selling dangerous and rare artifacts to wizards who use them in...

Some takeaways from today's #JournalGaming chat:

1/3 People making journaling games can find it easier to make and play a small game that feels like one they need in the current moment than to get into playing one they own and are interested in by someone else.

It seems like a lot of them, maybe more than you're prepared to deal with?

I'm not sure what to do about that. You don't know how many more I have drafted and playtested that I know I want to make for you! One's a sequel to Inscapes, about making games your approximate self..

Have you played? Who was the necromancer🌱? Was it the heroic ex-sheriff? The Jungian time-traveler? This was the most fun conversation among playtesters. The people in the game are the same, so anyone you interact with when you play could be the necromancer when someone else does.
