Review of 泾渭无间 audio drama season 1, which is already too long: I went into this knowing little more than that it is a story of revenge, with some love along the way, and that was what I got, but Qi Yan’s character blew everything else out of the water, and her VA, 浩天, absolutely sold her performance like her life depended on it. Each episode starts with a flashback to Qi Yan’s tortured childhood, and, every time, her hatred, resentment, and pain are made clear to the listeners. She is not lying when she calls herself a dead man walking—every choice she makes is calculated to further her goal of revenge, and she puts herself in harm’s way time and again to sell her facade as a meek scholar who is devoted to his princess. Most of the audio drama is spent setting up the backdrop for the start of Qi Yan’s plans to instigate the fall of the Wei empire—pretending to be a loving and caring husband to Nangong Jingnu to gain her trust, while aiding other members of the royal family to scheme and fight amongst themselves. Yet when her plans finally go into motion and Jingnu is caught in the line of fire, there is a hint of regret or guilt that Qi Yan cannot be the husband that she deserves, especially in the face of Jingnu’s unconditional love and care for her “weak” husband. The final third of the audio drama is a bit rushed, but I'm very excited to see (hear?) how it plays out, especially as Jingnu is also developing as a character as she begins to participate in the power struggle. The cast, performance, and music are amazing all around; I hope Season 2 will come soon!!!
Qi Yan's VA Hao Tian is a god. That's it (not really). But highly rec for anyone who loves political drama with a ruthless MC who slowly falls for her wife from the enemy empire. Very excited for the donghua/season 2 of the AD!!!
