On January 4, I was fortunate to visit Beavertail State Park and, with the help of several birders, quickly found the rare migrant eider which had been visiting for weeks. I posted my images, though sea duck hunting season was on-going. I thought, what hunter is his right mind would target a bird under these circumstances? Alt text continues in next image...

I have been an avid support of hunting rights (though 100% opposed to other firearm rights) because I've found hunters to be the most conservation-minded folks I've encountered. I'm sad to say that I must amend that to all but one hunter. Alt text continues...

I feel complicit in this bird's demise because I was cautious in sharing his location but I was not completely cautious. In the future, I will NOT share images of rare birds during hunting season and I hope others will share my resolve. May the hunter who shot this King Eider choke on its bones.

The King and Queen of the Arctic. In less than two months I’ll be returning to Finnish Lapland and Arctic Norway. The floating hides in Batsfjord really are next level, not just for photography, but the experience to be so close to such an iconic sea duck.
