The only other part of the #Klungkung Royal Palace to survive the Dutch destruction is the gateway from the outer courtyard to the inner palace. The square in front is probably where the 200-strong royal court puputan occurred in 1908, sombre stuff. You can climb the rebuilt bell tower nearby.

#Klungkung Palace: the C18th #KerthaGosa was the royal justice pavilion, located high above the town crossroads. Three Brahmin priests officiated with the king appearing regularly. The amazing ceiling is painted with images of afterlife punishments for the guilty, last renewed in 1963.

Looking from the #PuputanMonument to the #Klungkung Royal Palace it’s hard to realise that only about 15% remains after Dutch destruction after the 1908 invasion: the public justice hall, a floating pavilion in a lake, and the gateway from the outer courtyard into the next part of three palace.
