Review: ‘Kylo Ren: Legacy of Vader’ #12 Bows Out With a Flourish Well, we’ve arrived at the end. The final issue of Marvel’s _Legacy of Vader_ series released on Wednesday and with it a detailed explanation of Kylo’s troubled journey of self-exploration. The series appears to end on a cliffhanger, though of course, we know how Ren’s journey ultimately ends. However, as of right now the series has not been renewed for any additional issues. This early end may explain the rush in the last issue of _Legacy of Vader_ and this latest to provide some sort of psychological conclusion to this long and circuitous journey we’ve all been on. Kylo Ren’s foray into Vader’s vault brings him face-to-face with his own worst enemy and the result is poignant and entertaining. Ending the series in the mysterious vault within Vader’s former fortress lends the series enough “oomph” to finish on a high note, which Soule, Ross, and Woodard pull off together harmoniously. Other plotlines, like the Tava Ren connection, or the escaped former Jedi, Grandea, are presumably abandoned for the time being. **Spoilers ahead…** After last month’s explosive issue in which we learned Vaneé’s true objective – to turn Kylo Ren into another Vader in a strange, sycophantic, pseudo-religious bid for a return to galactic order – we begin this issue with Ren’s quiet resolve to enter the vault within Vader’s castle. Ren’s stated aim is for power, but like all _Star Wars_ supernatural, transformative dwellings or Force nexus points (Luke’s cave on Dagobah, Rey’s cave on Ahch-To) he gets something else entirely, or at least the power he is given is not the power he seeks. I always enjoy when _Star Wars_ leans into the off-the-wall, almost psychedelic format and therefore really loved the art in this issue. Ren is met by Vader upon his entrance into the vault, where he traverses a spare, black landscape only for it to pan out and reveal that he’s walking upon a giant version of Vader’s helmet, which he promptly tumbles off. The slippery and unreliable path of the dark side. Kylo’s conversation with the phantom Vader could easily have been rather tedious. After all, we’ve now spent 12 issues watching Kylo Ren struggle internally, but instead we see Ren arrive at a new conclusion when he asks Vader “Is this all we are? Fighting each other generation after generation…” This doubt opens the door to new realizations for Ren whose education on his grandfather highlights the truth about Vader’s strength. He was right to leave his mother to join the Jedi, he was right to marry Padme, he was right to defy the Jedi and he was right to destroy Palpatine. His aims and methods may have been questionable, but his real power lied in the authenticity of his own decisions, a power that Kylo Ren has avoided in his senseless journey to defeat the past. Phantom Vader, naturally, is then revealed to be Ren himself, or rather Ben Solo, and the dialogue here transitions to a much more wry tone harkening back to his father Han. The entire exchange feels incredibly cinematic down to the detail of Kylo Ren looking harried and anguished and Ben Solo looking clean, serene and confident. This issue goes a long way toward making Ben Solo’s redemption arc in _The Rise of Skywalker_ more robust and seamless. Ben the Jedi lives within him already as a strong presence even though Kylo Ren is not yet ready to acknowledge him. The final page of the issue shows Ren spat out from the vault into a free fall toward the lava pits of Mustafar, or so it appears. In the center of the page is a shadowed figure who transitions from a corporeal form to a Force ghost and is wearing what looks like Anakin’s robes from _Revenge of the Sith_. I admit, I did not immediately arrive at this conclusion, but only after some helpful input from my fellow writers here at SWNN who pointed out these details. Once again, Soule deftly weaves prequel narrative into sequel narrative making both stories stronger. Was Anakin with Ren inside the Force nexus within the vault? Or does he merely witness Ren’s fall as he denies his call to the light? Perhaps Vaneé wasn’t far off after all in wanting to burn Kylo Ren to transform him…Fire represents rebirth. And yet, how will Ren survive to see this new beginning? Hopefully we receive that answer in the future with a continuation of the _Legacy of Vader_ story, but for now, we’re left to wonder. **Rating: 8/10** ##### Sydney Sumpter + posts When she isn't watching her friends and family's eyes glaze over at the mention of The Clone Wars, she's at the park with her dog, Melvin, or on the couch with a book in one hand and a drink in the other. Random Fact: In Colin Trevorrow's "Duel of The Fates Script" it was revealed that Kylo Ren and the Knights of Ren killed Rey's parents by Order of Snoke.

(In hindsight it COULD make sense given Rey is 18 and Kylo is 30 during the Sequel Trilogy)

Review: ‘Legacy of Vader’ #11 – Vaneé Makes His Move as Kylo Ren Reaches a Key Moment It was always going to be difficult to follow up the incredible tenth issue of _Legacy of Vader_ , and though issue 11 doesn’t quite get there, it delivers something satisfying all the same as Kylo Ren returns from the Force realm and has to deal with reality. I thought this issue’s main cover was going to be symbolic in nature, but apparently not! Kylo Ren does end up donning a version of Vader’s helmet, and it’s all to do with Vaneé as finally his goal in this story becomes clear. I’m slightly mixed on this development; in itself, it’s pretty fun and it makes sense. But this issue wastes no time getting stuck into it and without any build up to this point in prior issues, it feels like it comes a bit out of the blue. Maybe I wouldn’t have found this story development so jarring if I wasn’t aware that _Legacy of Vader_ is wrapping up sooner rather than later, along with a lot of other _Star Wars_ comics. Knowing that though, it’s difficult to shake the feeling that writer Charles Soule had to cut out some more interesting character beats and exciting side quests so that he could just get to the endgame now. The story is still pretty great, but I just wasn’t prepared for it to end so soon. This and _Han Solo: Hunt for the Falcon_ are the two best _Star Wars_ comics around right now, so it’s sad to see it on its way out. As for the issue itself though, the story beats are well handled and Soule does an admirable job at delivering a tonne of exposition and answers in an entertaining way that many other writers would have handled clumsily. Kylo Ren ends the issue reaching a key point in his journey, seemingly achieving a new sense of clarity about himself. **Spoilers ahead…** CHARLES SOULE (W) • Luke Ross (A) • Cover by DERRICK CHEW So, Vaneé’s goal this whole time was to turn Kylo Ren into a new Darth Vader, believing that the galaxy was sorely missing a being who commanded fear and authority at all times. I don’t think it’s a particularly well thought out plan, unless he thought Vader would just take over the First Order, but it’s an interesting one that diametrically opposes Kylo’s desire to “let the past die”. I definitely didn’t expect to see Kylo waking up actually wearing a restored version of Darth Vader’s helmet (using the same kintsugi method that he later uses for his own helmet), but it’s a fun moment that is both wild and absolutely something that a mind as unhinged as Vaneé’s would do. Half of the issue is narrated by Vaneé as he explains his motivation to Kylo Ren. This could have easily been clunky exposition — and in a way, maybe it is — but it’s handled well by that magnificent splash page showing Kylo chasing him through Vader’s castle and dodging all manner of traps. After that, we even see him face off against old DT sentry droids that have also been rebuilt with the red kintsugi, keeping us wowed just long enough for the end of Vaneé’s monologue. Here is perhaps one of the issue’s more intriguing teases. Kylo Ren finds Darth Vader’s collection of lightsabers that were presumably collected from the corpses of his Jedi victims. The one he picks has a mostly golden hilt with a green kyber crystal, and in a matter of seconds Ren manages to bleed it so intensely that he cracks it in the process, just like he did with his crossguard saber. Not only does this tell us that he is still forcing his connection with the dark side, but it also leaves us wondering whose blade this once was. In the end, Kylo Ren holds Vaneé’s goldfish bowl head over a lava flat and crushes it with the Force as his grandfather’s old servant tells him he only wanted to help him fulfil his potential. Soule does brilliantly to remind us that as the nephew of Luke Skywalker and grandson of Darth Vader, Ben has been struggling under the weight of his potential his entire life. So as he crushes Vaneé’s skull with the Force, he declares “I am already everything I need to be.” That would be one hell of a moral if it wasn’t coming from a man hell-bent on being an authoritarian space fascist, but it’s a powerful declaration nonetheless and a key moment in his story. There’s not much story left to go now in _Legacy of Vader_ , but it looks like we’ll still have enough issues left to settle up the Tava Ren plotline and maybe even return to that Force realm for one final confrontation with Luke. We’ll have to see what awaits Kylo Ren inside Darth Vader’s vault next. _**Rating: 7/10**_ ##### Josh Atkins + posts Josh is a huge Star Wars fan, who has spent far too much time wondering if any Star Wars character could defeat Thanos with all the Infinity Stones. * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ Coleman Trebor - 'Star Wars' Character Spotlight * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ Captain Phasma - 'Star Wars Character Spotlight' * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ Rosario Dawson Teases a More Light-Hearted Ahsoka in Season 2 * Josh Atkins https://www.starwarsnewsnet.com/author/josh-atkins __ Taun We - 'Star Wars' Character Spotlight
