A wide alpine landscape photographed from the summit area of Lagazuoi in the Dolomites. In the foreground, softly sculpted snowdrifts form smooth, wind-shaped curves, sparkling subtly in the cold light. Beyond them, a high mountain basin opens up, partially filled with a dense layer of low-lying clouds or fog that flows gently through the valley like a frozen sea. Rugged rock formations rise dramatically from the mist on both sides, their steep, vertical faces showing warm brown and ochre tones contrasted by patches of fresh snow clinging to ledges and ridges. In the distance, jagged peaks emerge above the cloud layer, dusted with snow and sharply defined against a deep, clear blue sky.

A view across a valley to some mountains. They are partly covered in rising fog, illuminated in the morning sunshine. There are still plenty of clouds lingering in the distance, but the trails opposite can be seen winding up through forests. A tiny lake is just visible at the bottom.

It snowed overnight and into this morning, but finally - as we were about to descend - the clouds & fog began to lift. What a view! We didn't go down through the WWI tunnels as it was too icy - so will have to save that for next time :)
