A popular legend recounts that angels assisted in the construction of the Lalibela churches, working at night to complete the construction and, the remarkable speed and precision with which the churches were built. #africa #ethiopia #architecture #history #travel #photography #lalibela
In the highlands of #Ethiopia, there is #Lalibela, a magical holy place of 11 rock-hewn churches. From a distance, you cannot see them. They were carved from rock, going down/into the earth, with the help of #angels, according to local lore. #travel #adventure #photography #Africa #peace

Manuscript illustration of King Lalibela dressed in light blue and purple, carrying a scepter and wearing a golden crown. On his right and left side, servants holding swords and fly whisks are standing. Above them, there is a braided decorative board.
King-Saint Lalibela (ላሊበላ፡) reigned in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea in the 12th–13th centuries. He is best remembered as a church-builder 👷♂️

I didn’t see recent/current info online—below is what you can expect to pay for a 1 night trip to #Lalibela #Ethiopia ✈️🗺️
Notes:
• There’s only 1 flight in/out—you have to spend the night
• Hotel Maribela is the nicest hotel, but there are cheaper options
• Tour price includes the $100 entry ticket
One thing about me is that I’m always gonna order a local beer when I travel 🍺 Enjoying a St. George & sunset at the spaceship restaurant Ben Abeba in #Lalibela #Ethiopia ✈️🗺️
Planned my trip to #Lalibela #Ethiopia over a weekend so I could observe a Sunday service. If you’re planning a trip, I highly recommend doing this because it’s so unique and special ✈️🗺️
Visited #Lalibela #Ethiopia for the rock-hewn churches & Bete Giorgis didn’t disappoint 🤩 It’s amazing how this was carved downwards into the rock by hand ✈️🗺️

In #Ethiopia, where Christianity was isolated from many developments of theology and practice. The scene is one of fervent belief in a small church in #lalibela a site of pilgrimage. A very different environment to a familiar western gathering. #amateuremigrant
Similar but different
"The holy city of #Lalibela became a substitute for the holy places of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, and as such has had considerable influence on Ethiopian Christianity."

CNN was not able to independently verify reports that #Lalibela was captured by Tigrayan fighters, but the growing threat of #CulturalHeritage sites being drawn into armed #conflict is (despite the tragedy of war anyway) increasingly disturbing....
Today with Dr. Alebachew and PhD Manon Routhiau,, we trained the students of Weldiya university on the field near Gannata Mariam. We found smithing slags, poteries, and grinders. An excellent survey. #ethiopia #lalibela @CFEE_addis @CNRS @AmbafranceET
